West Cork - Regional Information: Bantry: A county town, situated 80km west of cork, is one of the larger towns in the west Cork region. the town of Bantry is located at the head of a narrow inlet on the eastern shore of Bantry Bay. This inlet is enclosed by steep shores that provide natural shelter and a dramatic and attractive landscape setting for the town centre. Bantry acts as a primary urban centre for a large rural hinterland and acts as an employment centre for the marine industry and the service and tourism sectors. Bantry is one of the most naturally beautiful and unspoilt areas of Ireland.  The Sheep's Head Peninsula: The Sheep's Head is a peaceful, unspoilt peninsula and has some of Irelands most beautiful scenery. Engulfed by both Bantry and Dunmanus bay, the Sheep's Head peninsula is home to the picturesque villages of Ahakista and Kilcrohane. The Sheep's Head is one of the most south westerly points on Ireland, and due to its proximity to Gulf Stream, it enjoys a very mild climate. The Sheep's Head is located approx 60 miles from Cork City and is within 90 minutes drive of Cork Airport and Ferry Terminal.  The Beara Peninsula: Beara is the wildest and most rugged of the peninsulas. Recognised by most from Daphne due Mauriers novel Hungry Hill it has areas of immense charm and splendid isolation. The main town is Castletownbere, a thriving fishing port, other villages include Adrigole, Eyeries, Ardroon and Allchies. Glengarriff sits at the gateway to the Beara Peninsula and has much to offer with famous gardens at Garnish Island, The Blue Pool and the most breathtaking scenery.  General West Cork: Skibbereen is really the market town of West Cork. A historic and cultural enclave with great shopping, the gateway to the wonderful villages of Baltimore, Castletownsend, Glandore and Union Hall to name but a few. Clonakilty, 'The Beach Centre of West Cork” is also a lively and interesting town. Good hotels, restaurants and shopping a modal railway make for an interesting visit.
